These Times Are A-Changin’

Posted in Uncategorized | June 23rd, 2009

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you guys know that I’m still breathing and working on some new material. I’m still rockin’ the Nashville Roller Derby and some various events. Howver, I’m focusing some attention on new ventures as well. This means there will be less booking and more secret music being made. Also, working on some fun ‘flash-mob’-style ideas for some fun parties around Nashville. So, yeah, still doing the thing and still dreaming new ways to make you dance.

Peace. Love. Hug a fat kid.

-DJ Fat Andy

p.s. Working on some fun cheap merch ideas; so you can rock some fun gear without breaking the bank.

DJ Fat Andy’s “Top 5 Hip Hop Albums”

Posted in Offerings | October 21st, 2008

So, after talking with “the family” about musical influences. I realize, like anyone that has come to watch me spin, that my music is all over the place. So here is a place to let people know who has and is influencing me.
I give you: My Top 5 Hip Hop Records

Follow the LeaderEric B & Rakim: Follow the Leader

In 1988, when Follow the Leader was released the was no slicker production than Eric B & Rakim. I know most point to Paid in Full as the duo’s masterpiece, but I feel on their sophomore effort they were able to write songs. The first effort, which is amazing, felt more like the took great freestyles from each MC and slammed them together to put out a record. Follow the Leader felt like the two came together to craft unbelievably great songs like “Follow the Leader”, “Microphone Fiend”, “Lyrics of Fury”, and “The R”.

Pro-PainMars iLL: Pro-Pain

This duo from the ATL flipped me as producer on my head. Dust is by far one of the best turntablists and producers I’ve ever heard. His ability to use source material including blues and funk and turn them into hard hitting boom bap hip hop tracks. In the beats I create now I try to use source material from all genres instead of the predictable, like Dust. To quote MANchild from “Sound Off”: “Pro-Pain the album now completes the hat trick”

Jurassic 5: Quality Control

Forming at the open mic night at The Good Life Cafe, Jurassic 5 brought new boom-bap tracks and classic inspired vocals to new generation of hip hop heads. “The Good Life was a renaissance period in hip hop,” according to Cut Chemist, one of the beat maestros of the group. This record pulls sample from James Brown to the A-Team and makes everything sound new and fresh. We all owe Charli 2na, Akil, Zaakir aka Soup, Mark 7even, DJ Nu-Mark, and Cut Chemist a big “Thanks” for bringing the crew mentality and delivery back to hip hop.

Deepspace 5: The Night We Called It A Day

Another crew bringing classic inspired crew hip hop back, but this time formed by an all-star underground Christian artists. Still boom-bap, but Deepspace 5’s beat sound more East Coast Renaissance than the party grooves of Jurassic 5. On this first full-legth outing Deepspace 5 paints pictures of the struggle of the underground with the added pressure of a moral standard higher than Earth. Beat Rabbi, Fred B, The Listener, Mars iLL, Playdough, Sintax.the.Terrific, Illtrip, Sivion, and Sev Statik make this collective continue to churn out great tracks even as they form their own label to do so.

Run-DMC: Raising Hell

Rev Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay deliver classic tracks like “Peter Piper”; “It’s Tricky”; “My Adidas”; “Walk This Way”; “Raising Hell”; and “You Be Illin’.” Truly a masterpiece. Any questions?
